How many emails can you send from Gmail a day?

Guide · Last updated 26 October 2026

A personal Gmail account can send about 500 emails a day. A paid Google Workspace account can send 2,000 a day, but only 1,500 if you use Gmail's mail merge, and 500 while the account is on a trial.

Gmail and Workspace limits at a glance

Checked 26 October 2026 against Google's own pages:

Account Limit Figure
Personal Gmail Emails a day About 500
Personal Gmail Recipients in one email 500
Google Workspace Emails per user a day 2,000
Google Workspace Mail merge a day (counted with your other email) 1,500
Google Workspace, trial Emails a day 500
Google Workspace Recipients in one email 2,000, of which 500 outside your organisation
Google Workspace Total recipients a day 10,000
Google Workspace Different people a day 3,000, of which 2,000 outside your organisation
Google Workspace Recipients in one email sent through the Gmail API 500
Google Workspace Recipients in one email sent by an email app over SMTP 100

Google counts over a rolling 24 hours and says the limits can change without notice.

What "You have reached a limit for sending mail" means

When you go over a limit, Google stops your account sending for up to 24 hours. You can still read and receive email. With personal Gmail you have to wait. In Google Workspace, your administrator can sometimes restore sending sooner. Then send less at a time.

Workspace trial accounts

A new Workspace account is on a trial limit of 500 emails a day. Google lifts it after you've paid $100, sometimes up to 75 days later. Some older answers say 60 days; Google now says 75.

Mail merge limits

Gmail's own mail merge is only in some paid Workspace editions, not personal Gmail. It allows 1,500 recipients a day, and those count towards your 2,000-a-day total. Apps that send through your Gmail account use the same limits; there's no exemption for apps.

How long a list takes to send

Google publishes daily limits, not hourly ones. At the daily limit:

List size Personal Gmail (500 a day) Google Workspace (2,000 a day)
300 1 day 1 day
1,000 2 days 1 day
3,000 6 days 2 days

When Gmail is the wrong tool

Google's rules for bulk senders apply to anyone who sends around 5,000 or more emails a day to personal Gmail addresses. Marketing email must have a one-click unsubscribe, which Groupmail can't add when it sends through Gmail or Microsoft sign-in. So use Gmail for emails to your own customers, and connect a sending service such as SMTP2GO for newsletters and large marketing sends.

How Groupmail 7 paces your sends

These are Groupmail's own built-in limits, not Google's:

  • Personal Gmail: up to 500 emails a day, sent at up to 20 an hour, so 500 emails take about a day with Groupmail open.
  • Google Workspace: up to 2,000 a day, sent at up to 80 an hour.

Groupmail counts over a rolling 24 hours. When a send reaches the daily limit, it pauses that account and carries on by itself as the oldest emails pass 24 hours, while Groupmail is open. If Google says you're sending too fast, Groupmail waits and tries again. These built-in limits can't be raised, but you can slow an account down in Settings → Throttle.

Groupmail sends a separate email to each person, so the limit on recipients per email never applies.

Questions people ask

How do I send more than 500 emails a day from Gmail?

Use a paid Google Workspace account, which allows 2,000 a day, or a sending service such as SMTP2GO for bigger lists and newsletters. Google doesn't raise the personal Gmail limit.

Can I send 200 emails a day with Gmail?

Yes. 200 is well under the 500-a-day limit for personal Gmail.

How do I fix "You have reached a limit for sending mail"?

Wait. Google lifts the block within 24 hours. Then send less at a time, or move bigger sends to Google Workspace or a sending service.

How many emails can I send a day with Google Workspace?

2,000 per user a day, or 1,500 with Gmail's mail merge. Trial accounts are limited to 500.

How do I increase my Gmail sending limit?

Move to a paid Google Workspace plan. If you're on a trial, the limit rises after you've paid $100, sometimes up to 75 days later. Google doesn't raise limits on request.

Is there a limit on mail merge in Gmail?

Yes. Gmail's own mail merge allows 1,500 recipients a day, counted with your other email.

Why can't I use mail merge in Gmail?

Gmail's mail merge is only in some paid Google Workspace editions. Personal Gmail accounts don't have it.

How do I send a file over 25 MB in Gmail?

Gmail sends larger files as a Google Drive link. Through Groupmail's Gmail sign-in the whole email can be about 3 MB, so for bigger files Groupmail sends through SMTP2GO or your own mail server, or you can share a link instead.
